Junior undergraduate University Scholar Austin Tate (far right in above photo) straddles two worlds. By day, he is a mechanical engineering major, minoring in visual media studies. By night, he is Achates, a character in a new version of Vergil’s epic poem, The Aeneid. The new version is being billed as “a play with songs,” performed by Duke’s renowned musical theater group, Hoof ‘n’ Horn. A workshop production that has never been performed before on stage, Hoof ‘n’ Horn’s performance is a collaboration with Duke’s Theater Studies department, which brought in professional director Kay Matschullat to work with the students on this modern adaptation of one of the world’s classic epics. The music featured in the performance is by Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening, American Psycho).
