The Beauty of Resistance

“The Beauty of Resistance”: A video about the Guatemalan genocide

This video was created by UNC undergraduate student Caitlyn McHale, under the guidance of Rachel Schaevitz, Postdoctoral Fellow for the Carolina Public Humanities, in collaboration with the UNC-Duke Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.  It was designed with a high school audience in mind and features UNC Professor Emilio del Valle Escalante and Duke Mellon Visiting Professor (Spring 2017) and human rights activist Irma Alicia Velasquez Nimatuj.

The video examines the history of violence against the indigenous Maya people of Guatemala and how they have historically and continue to resist the multiple and brutal forms of state oppression.
