Through the eyes of Anita de la Torre, a 12 year-old girl, readers land in the Dominican Republic during the 1960-1961 attempt to overthrow Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship. Anita watches most of her family emigrate to the United States to escape violence, but struggles with the idea of leaving her home behind. Author Julia Alvarez delivers an incredible story about transition, loss, perseverance and freedom. It is one with which readers can empathize with and relate to.
