This website celebrates the life and legacy of John Hope Franklin, the distinguished scholar who died on March 25, 2009. It contains information about Franklin's many accomplishments, both at Duke University and throughout his pioneering career in the fields of history and African American studies. It also includes hundreds of condolence messages that Duke received in the days following his passing. We thank you for visiting this site and for your interest in Franklin's life and work. John Hope and Aurelia's only son, John Whittington, is the director of Partnerships and International Programs at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History & Culture.
