Duke Islamic Studies students are encouraged to combine academic study and scholarship with language acquisition and international, cross-cultural experiences. The core components of undergraduate Islamic Studies are the Undergraduate Certificate in Islamic Studies, Muslim Cultures Focus cluster, and DISC DukeEngage programs.
DISC’s signature undergraduate program is its Undergraduate Certificate in Islamic Studies. Many students decide to earn an Islamic Studies certificate after participating in the spring semester “Muslim Cultures” Focus cluster or taking Arabic language classes.
DISC’s undergraduate certificate in Islamic Studies will provide students with:

The Muslim Cultures Focus features different faculty and courses each year, but it always offers students a broad introduction to the peoples, institutions, beliefs and practices that characterize the Muslim world.
DISC has worked with DukeEngage since its inception. Ella Lipin, Isabelle Figaor, and Andrew Simon (photo at right) were among the five students who participated in Duke Engage Yemen pilot program in 2007. See more pictures and read their blog postings from Yemen. In 2008, 10 students participated in our DukeEngage Cairo program. Visit the DukeEngage page to read about their Cairo experiences on the Cairo group blog and to read their individual blog entries. The DukeEngage Istanbul students also posted about their experiences on the DukeEnage blog.
At DISC we believe in the transformative power of cross-cultural experiences. A study abroad experience is required of certificate students. In addition to DukeEngage, there are other opportunities with the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and Office of Study Abroad
The new URS Office website provides information on programs and research funding at Duke and elsewhere. You will also find a calendar of deadlines, resources for research training, and policy guidelines for research abroad.
This 10-12 week internship is designed to encourage Muslim American students to participate in civic engagement through Washington, D.C. Internships. Read more.
