DISC’s programs embody the DukeEngage mission that "students apply what they have learned in the classroom to address societal issues at home or abroad." Read more about our DukeEngage programs in Yemen and Cairo.
This conference will offer students, staff and faculty who are interested and involved in civic engagement at Duke, especially international civic engagement in the Middle East, an opportunity to share and reflect on the particular challenges and opportunities of such work.

DISC has worked with DukeEngage since its inception. Our DukeEngage programs in Yemen and Cairo both feature:

During the 8-week DukeEngage Cairo program, students live in apartments, work in NGOs, meet with community leaders, study Arabic, and visit many famous and not-so-famous sites.

Students have also worked with AWTAD (Association for Women's Total Advancement and Development). AWTAD's mission is to "empower and engage the community, to mobilize the role of women as nucleolus development agents, through effectively leveraging Egypt's social and human capital." You can join AWTAD's fan page on Facebook.
DE Cairo 2009 students have also worked with Al Kayan, an NGO that works with children with disabilities and provides various therapies and activites, where they have organized social outings and group activities for the children.
READ ABOUT PAST DISC DUKE ENGAGE PROGRAMS:
The popular Duke in Turkey summer study abroad program has been suspended for the summer of 2009. Last summer, this program was enhanced by the addition of a DukeEngage component. You can read what students have to say in their DukeEngage Istanbul blogs
See the DukeEngage site to learn more about DukeEngage and the application process or email Lindy Black Margida.
Undergraduates are required to register their foreign travel plans on the Duke Travel Registry. The Registry will be the first source of information to be consulted in case of a health emergency, natural disaster, or a crisis of civil or political unrest in a location that requires assistance or evacuation. Read more about the undergraduate travel policy and registry.
DISC encourages all Islamic Studies students to spend time in a majority-Muslim country. See our Study Abroad page, where you can read more about the many study abroad options available.
An Islamic Studies certificate can open doors for students in fields where there is a critical shortage of people with knowledge of Islamic languages, Islam, and Muslim cultures.
