DukeEngage Cairo 2008

DUKE ENGAGE CAIRO, 2008:

Ten students participated in the DukeEngage Cairo program, led by Professor Mbaye Lo (Arabic/AMES). The students in this 8-week program lived in apartments in Cairo, where they worked in three NGOs, studied and practiced Arabic at Al Diwan Center, and met with community leaders and scholars at educational and cultural institutions in Cairo.

NGO PLACEMENTS: At St. Andrews Refugee Ministry students developed a summer English literacy program to provide teenage Somali refugees with enough functional literacy skills to continue their educations at the end of the summer. They also put together a women's workshop that focused on computer skills and self-empowerment.

DukeEngage Cairo students also worked with two other NGOS, developing proposals for the organizations on how they might improve their programs, marketing, efficiency, and effectiveness. They worked at Aresalah Association for Charity, which offers classes for the blind, supervises orphanages and provides educational opportunities to this disfranchised segment of the Egyptian population. They also worked at Ebnati Care Society, an orphanage for girls from 2 months to 18 years old where residents produce many artistic works and hand-made crafts that find their way to the local markets.

DukeEngage Yemen 2007

DUKE ENGAGE YEMEN, 2007

"Some people know from an early age that they want to make a difference-to help the community, serve the less fortunate and dedicate their lives to a worthy cause. I, on the other hand, found my inspiration to serve others only recently, across the street from a Baskin Robbins in Sana'a, Yemen." Andrew Simon, DukeEngage Yemen 07.
