INFORMATION AND RESOURCES FOR APPLICANTS FOR GRADUATE SCHOOL

If you are interested in graduate Islamic Studies at Duke, you must meet the admission and graduation requirements of the Graduate School and the department or program that will serve as your disciplinary home as you pursue research on Islam and the Muslim world.

FUNDING GRADUATE STUDIES AT DUKE:

The Graduate School funds several competitive fellowships for incoming and continuing graduate students. No applicaiton is necessary for these fellowships as applicants are nominated by their departments. Click here to learn more about these competitive fellowships.

If you are applying to Duke to pursue graduate Islamic Studies at Duke, you should explore external sources of funding that cover all or part of the costs of graduate education:

GRADUATE FUNDING RESOURCES AT DUKE

Duke Office of Research Support maintains a website with links and resources for graduate students seeking research funding.  The Graduate School website offers information on student loans, work study and other financial aid information and resources. Many departments have additional sources of funding. Islamic Studies graduate students are encouraged to explore options within their individual department.

Conference Travel Fellowships: Open to students in any Ph.D. program who have passed all parts of preliminary exams and is actively participating in a conference. Students limited to one travel fellowship per fiscal year. Applications due one month prior to conference.

Summer Research Fellowships are available to students in the Humanities and Social Sciences in the summer following years 3-6 who have passed their preliminary exam. The fellowships pay a summer stipend and fees.

Pre-dissertation/Dissertation Research Travel Awards provide up to $3,000 for overseas research travel.

Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching: The Graduate School will make at least one $1,500 award each Spring to recognize outstanding teaching by an actively enrolled Ph.D. student. Read more about the nomination and selection process. To apply, any graduate student who is nominated or interested should submit the following to their Director of Graduate Studies by February 1.

The Graduate School works to secure funding for advanced students who need to do research overseas. Information on other fellowship opportunities, from both university and external sources, may be obtained from the Center for International Studies.

International Fellowship for Advanced Students: Students must have completed all degree requirements except the dissertaiton to be eligible for this fellowship, which covers registration and insurance fees and pays a stipend of over $18,000. The Graduate School offers one or two research awards to students who must travel overseas. This fellowship pays a stipend and fees for the academic year.

FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowships: These fellowships support the study of foreign languages andr area studies. Some fellowships awarded for use of the advanced foreign language while carrying out overseas research during the academic year. The languages for which fellowships are offered by each center include Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Urdu. The FLAS competitions are open to graduate and professional school students currently enrolled at Duke.

 

GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS ADMINISTERED BY THE GRADUATE SCHOOL

Katherine Stern Dissertation Year Fellowship: Dissertation-year fellowships provided for advanced graduate students. Application requires departmental endorsement.


Bass Named Instructorships Program in Arts and Sciences: Seven awards provided jointly by the Graduate School or Trinity College. The student is required to teach one undergraduate course during the academic year in which they hold the award. Application requires departmental endorsement.

Julian Price Endowed Dissertation Research Fellowship in Humanities and History covers registration and health fees and includes a stipend of over $18,000. Students must have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation.

Library Internships: The Graduate School and Perkins Library offer four 10-month internships to students working with special library materials.


Aleane Webb Dissertation Research Fellowships provides support for miscellaneous research projects associated with the dissertation.

ADDITIONAL INTERNAL RESOURCES ADMINISTERED BY WOMEN'S STUDIES


Ernestine Friedl Research Award, for advanced graduate students whose dissertations explore the cultural, social, and biological construction of gender.


Anne McDougall Memorial Award
is given annually to a Duke woman undergraduate or graduate student who pursues areas of human service by studying psychology and related fields. Preference is given to returning women students.


The Race and Gender Award (up to $1000 per award) will be given to undergraduate and graduate students whose projects promote scholarly exploration and research on topics of gender and race.


The Dora Anne Little Award is given to a Duke student at the undergraduate or graduate level, who has excelled in service to the campus and community which extends beyond the classroom.

New Exchange Program for Graduate Students Studying Religion in the U.S. and Indonesia

Five graduate fellowships wil be awarded to U.S. students to study at the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies and the Center for Religious and Cross-Cultural Studies at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Click here for information about their programs and scholarships.

National Security Internship at George Washington University

9-week, full immersion summer program combines Arabic language study, National Security Seminars, and an internship at the FBI or Dept. of Homeland Security.
